CURB Magazine
managing editor
What is it?
Curb Magazine is a capstone course where 22 students are “hired” on to a publications team to produce and fund a published issue, all from scratch. As managing editor, I worked alongside the editor in chief to produce a vision for the magazine, made sure the project was on time and everyone knew their tasks and deadlines.
Our Vision
The vision for this magazine was meant to bring to light the various theories of darkness, contrasting the sinister and villainous notions with the peaceful and curious ones. We wanted to challenge the ideas that darkness is not strictly bad, but makes room for good for those who have their eyes open to seeing it this way.
My Pieces
My feature story, “Our Own Little Chapel,” is about the strength of community that was demonstrated when a retreat center in the heart of Wisconsin lost their chapel due to a catastrophic structure fire. The story is now nominated for Best Soft Feature Story by the Wisconsin Broadcast Association.
My online article, “How to Taste Chocolate Like a Professional Chocolatier” shows a step-by-step process on how you can turn a favorite treat into an experience.
Finally, for our multimedia piece, the EIC and I took advantage of our love for dancing and documented our experience at a Bachata lesson at the Brink Lounge in Madison. Watch Bachata After Hours to get an inside scoop on why people dedicate these evening hours to swinging their hips to a syncopated rhythm. It’s Bachata time!
Results
In the end, we funded and distributed 10,000 copies of Curb: In the Dark all around Wisconsin and exceeded our fundraising goal to get our project through production.
